TikTok Shop Samples: How Creators Get Free Products to Promote

Samples let you try a product before committing to promote it. Free samples, refundable samples, Sample Points, and Sample Coupons all have different eligibility rules — but every path ties back to one obligation: 14 days to post qualifying content after the sample arrives, with one optional 7-day extension available per sample.

Every fact below traces to a primary TikTok Shop policy or help-center page — all linked at the bottom under Sources.

How samples work — the short version

There are five ways to get a product to promote on TikTok Shop:

Free samples

Request from the Product Marketplace. Free to you, but you owe content within 14 days.

Refundable samples

You buy the product, post content, hit sales criteria within 120 days, then TikTok refunds you. Open only to creators 18+ in the US.

Sample Points

TikTok-issued points (no cash value, non-transferable) you can redeem for free product samples. Still has the 14-day posting rule.

Sample Coupons

Sent to you by TikTok (not the seller) via pop-up, banner, email, or in-app notification. Discount a product at checkout — sometimes to $0. 14-day posting rule applies.

Sample Campaigns

Time-limited campaigns surfaced via Creator Center banners. Pick from a curated list, follow campaign instructions, hit the campaign-specific deadline.

Eligibility — who can request samples

Three baseline gates apply to free samples:

5,000+ followers

TikTok Shop's stated minimum to apply for or purchase samples when a seller is offering them.

Sales within the last 120 days

Free sample requests require historical sales activity. Without it, you can still use refundable samples or shoppable-video discovery — and once you start earning GMV, free requests unlock.

Per-seller threshold

Sellers can set their own additional thresholds on top of TikTok's baseline. If you don't meet the seller's bar, the sample-request option won't show even when you meet TikTok's baseline.

First sample, no track record yet?

TikTok runs a dedicated “Get your first sample” entry point for creators with no prior commission orders. You still need 5K+ followers, but the 120-day-sales gate doesn’t apply for that first sample.

How to request a free sample

1

Open Creator Center → Product Marketplace

Use the Free Sample filter. Look for the Free Sample label or Get Sample button on the product card.

2

Tap Get free sample → Request from seller

Confirm your shipping info, agree to post content.

3

Wait for the seller to approve

TikTok auto-cancels the request after 7 days of no response. Sellers are not required to approve — no response isn't a default yes.

4

Sample ships, you receive it

Your 14-day clock starts when the sample is delivered.

5

Post qualifying content within 14 days

Short video (kept public 3+ days, product link tagged) OR a LIVE running 10+ consecutive minutes with the product pinned. TikTok sends in-app + email reminders at 3 days out and 1 day out.

6

Track in Manage Samples

Statuses: Awaiting shipment, Need content, Post in review, Content Criteria Met.

The 14-day rule (the one creators miss)

Every free sample, Sample Points redemption, and Sample Coupon order carries the same posting obligation:

Content must be posted within 14 days of receiving the sample.

  • Reminder ping in-app + email at 3 days before the deadline, again at 1 day.
  • If you miss the deadline, your fulfillment rate drops — sellers see it. Lower rate = fewer future sample approvals AND reduced eligibility for Sample Coupons and promotions.
  • You can still post late; the order stays in your history. The penalty is on your future eligibility, not the current sample.
  • Repeated missed deadlines = can be removed from the program entirely.

Sellers can’t see your fulfillment rateas a number, but they do see a tier label (Ok / Good / Better) on each creator. You can’t see your own rate — only the underlying samples + statuses in Manage Samples.

What counts as a qualifying post

Two formats are accepted. Either format counts as fulfilled if it stays within the criteria:

Short video

  • • Product link tagged inside the video (use Add Link → Product)
  • • Stays public for at least 3 days

LIVE

  • • Runs for at least 10 consecutive minutes
  • • Product pinned in the LIVE shopping bag for the duration

Content posted PAST the 14-day window is excluded from the “Need content” queue and counted as a missed obligation against your fulfillment rate, even if you eventually post.

How many samples you can have open at once

Two caps interact. The lower of the two applies.

By creator badge level

  • • Bronze / Silver: up to 20
  • • Gold: 40
  • • Platinum: 50
  • • Ruby through Diamond: 100

By monthly GMV

  • • Under $5K GMV: up to 5
  • • $5K-$150K GMV: up to 20
  • • Over $150K GMV: up to 50

“Open at once” counts requests in review with sellers, awaiting shipment, or pending content creation. Once a sample is marked Content Criteria Met or cancels out, the slot frees up. One of any given item per seller— you can’t request two of the same T-shirt from the same seller, but you can request that T-shirt from a different seller.

If you can’t post in time — extensions + appeals

TikTok built two escape hatches into the Sample Integrity Policy. Each one can be used only once per sample.

7-day extension

Manage Samples → sample order details page → tap Unable to post within 14 days. You get an additional 7 days. Sellers don’t see extension requests and can’t block them — TikTok manages the process entirely. Only one extension per sample; a second attempt is rejected. Miss the extension window too and the sample is overdue, with the same fulfillment- rate hit as a regular missed deadline.

Defective-sample appeal

Same path: Manage Samples → sample order details → tap Something wrong with this sample. If approved, your posting obligation is waived for that sample. One appeal per sample. A second attempt is rejected.

Product becomes unavailable after you order

Different mechanic: your 14-day clock pauses automatically. If the product is unavailable for 10 total days(doesn’t have to be consecutive), the order auto-cancels and you owe no content.

Refundable samples — full mechanics

Refundable samples are governed by a different terms document than free samples. The eligibility, timeline, and refund rules all differ.

18+ and US-only

Refundable Sample program is open only to TikTok Shop e-commerce creators who are at least 18 and reside in the US.

Creator Marketplace entry

You must enter via Creator Product Marketplace and tap Order refundable sample. Buying through the consumer cart (add-to-cart or buy-now) does NOT count as a refundable sample — it becomes a normal purchase.

One at a time per product

You can only have one active sample order (free OR refundable) per product. To switch, withdraw the free request first.

No second creator commission

If another creator buys the product as a refundable sample from your content, you don't earn commission on that order.

120-day sales window

You need to generate the required number of sales orders within 120 days of receiving the sample. The sales count toward the refund only after they pass the refund/return period (typically 30 days post-buyer-delivery).

90-day target

TikTok officially recommends hitting the sales criteria within 90 days. Sales generated after day 90 may not clear the refund/return period before the 120-day window closes.

Refund timing

Once criteria are met and refund/return windows pass, refund initiates. Typically 5-10 business days to land in the original payment method (or TTS credit if the original method fails).

Self-purchase doesn't count

Buying the product yourself via your own content/Showcase does not contribute to the sales criteria.

Out-of-stock pause

If the product becomes temporarily unavailable, the timeline pauses for up to 10 days. If still unavailable after 10 days, refund is processed automatically.

Permanent removal = auto-refund

If the seller closes shop, the product is delisted, or the listing is permanently banned, refund is processed automatically.

Sample Points — TikTok’s invite-only points program

Sample Points is an invite-only program — not every creator has access. If you do, you can redeem points for free samples (TikTok covers the cost of the item plus shipping and tax). The 14-day posting rule still applies to anything you redeem.

No cash value

Points are promotional. They can't be sold, transferred, assigned, redeemed for cash, or pledged to a third party. You have no legal property interest in them.

Per-Offer-Period balance

Points come in “Offer Periods.” To claim, you have to make at least one initial redemption during the period. Whatever's left at the end of the period expires.

First-come, first-served

Point allocation per period can run out before the period ends.

Selected products only

Points apply to a curated subset of TikTok Shop products, not the full catalog. The points cost per product is shown on its purchase page.

Non-refundable

Anything bought with points can't be returned or refunded.

Can't be combined

Points cannot stack with gift cards, coupons, or other promotions on the same order.

Shipping may be on you

TikTok may require you to cover shipping costs for some redemptions.

Forfeiture for violations

Violating the program guidelines can result in forfeiture of points or removal from the program.

Sample Coupons — discounted (or $0) at checkout

Sample Coupons are sent by TikTok, not by sellers, through Creator Center pop-ups, banners, emails, and in-app notifications. They discount eligible products at checkout — sometimes to $0.

How they arrive

Pop-up or banner on the Creator Center homepage, or email + in-app notification linking to a Sample Coupon landing page.

Claim then checkout

Tap Claim Coupons → tap a product → Buy Now. Apply the coupon to a single order — you can't split it across multiple orders.

Auto-added to Showcase

When you check out with a Sample Coupon, the product is automatically added to your Product Showcase so it's available to tag in upcoming content.

14-day posting rule applies

Same 14 days, same content criteria (3+ day video OR 10+ min LIVE with the product tagged/pinned).

Pause on unavailability

If the product sells out or deactivates after you order, the 14-day clock pauses. After 10 unavailable days the order cancels with no content owed.

Refund of the coupon

If your order is fully refunded, the coupon comes back for re-use (unless it has expired). Partially-refunded orders don't return the coupon. Shipping-discount coupons don't return either.

Auto-cancel = no content owed

If the seller's account is closed or banned, the product is banned, or the listing is removed from the affiliate program, the order cancels automatically with no content obligation.

Free Sample Campaigns

Sample Campaigns are time-bound. TikTok surfaces them via Creator Center banners. The flow differs from a regular sample request:

1

Tap the banner

Banner appears on the Creator Center home in the app.

2

Browse the curated list

Campaigns offer a specific assortment, available only during the campaign window.

3

Pick + confirm address

Submit the order from the campaign landing page.

4

Promote + post by the campaign deadline

Each campaign sets its OWN content deadline (separate from the 14-day default). Check the campaign instructions.

5

Hit sales = reward coupon

If your content drives sales, you receive a reward coupon. (Campaign-specific — not every campaign offers this.)

Sample Integrity Policy — the fulfillment-rate system

The Sample Integrity Policy is what enforces the 14-day rule. It tracks your historical posting behavior as a fulfillment rate — a separate metric from Creator Health Rating (CHR), although both can affect your ability to operate in TikTok Shop.

Your fulfillment rate drops when

You receive a sample and don't post qualifying content within the 14-day window (or 21-day window if you used your one extension).

Sellers see your tier label

Sellers viewing your sample request see a posting-performance tier: Ok, Good, or Better. They use this to decide whether to approve your request.

You can't see your own rate

TikTok exposes the underlying samples + statuses in Manage Samples but doesn't show you the numeric rate or the tier label.

Lower rate → fewer approvals

Sellers reject low-fulfillment-rate creators more often. Sample Coupons + promotion eligibility also degrade as the rate falls.

Repeated misses → program removal

Consistently missing deadlines can result in being removed from the sample program entirely.

One extension AND one appeal per sample

Extensions are 7 extra days; appeals waive the obligation if the sample is defective. Use these instead of just missing the deadline.

For the broader account-health system creators usually mean when they say “CHR,” see the TikTok Shop Violations guide.
